Hendrik-Jan Grievink (1977) is a visionary artist and designer. He has been connected with Next Nature from the very beginning in various roles and is currently a Fellow. Hendrik-Jan uses imagination to visualize thought-provoking future scenarios that help us make better choices in the present. Projects he has worked on include Meat the Future (the In Vitro Meat Cookbook and Bistro In Vitro), which explores the cultural potential of lab-grown meat, and Reprodutopia, a retro-futuristic fertility clinic where visitors are invited to reflect on the future of intimacy, relationships, and reproduction. A remarkable aspect of this project was his speculative design for an artificial womb, which went viral on social media.
In collaboration with Next Nature founder Koert van Mensvoort, he created the publication Next Nature: Nature Changes Along With Us and developed the Pyramid of Technology, a conceptual model that visualizes how technology becomes nature (and what individuals and organizations can learn from this process). Hendrik-Jan regularly gives lectures on his work, both in the Netherlands and internationally. He is currently engaged in a long-term research project titled Check Your Technoprivilege, which addresses the growing technology gap and offers concrete tools for raising awareness, such as the Checklist of Technology Privilege. After spending a year in New York in 2023, he has now returned to Amsterdam, where he lives and works.
