Marjolein Pijnappels is the first Dutch futures ecologist. She interweaves the wisdom of nature with emerging technologies to reimagine our futures. She creates future scenarios as entangled ecologies, designed by and for humans, non-human species, and the non-living natural and artificial realms—each as an autonomous actor and valued participant.

She uses storytelling, ecology, biomimicry, design, and speculative thinking to gently disrupt organizations, inviting them to transcend anthropocentric worldviews and envision a future where humans are just one element in the “compost heap of life.”

With over twenty years of experience in ecology, design, research, and consultancy, Marjolein works alongside businesses, governments, schools, and museums to turn the vision of a just and thriving multi-species society into reality. From corporate landscapes to educational habitats, she plants the seeds of regenerative thinking, fostering a new generation of multi-species collaborators.

Marjolein’s method, “Futures Ecologies,” has been recognized in the national manual Futures Thinking by the Rijksbouwmeester. This approach is rooted in “becoming-with” nature rather than attempting to master it. “Futures Ecologies” challenges colonial narratives of progress, advocating instead for a future where the interplay of technology, storytelling, and ecology fosters a deeper understanding of our interconnectedness with all beings—and turns it into action.
