The Mammoth was the last of the giant land mammals of the Pleistocene era. Once believed to be hunted into extinction by humans, mounting evidence suggests that they were extremely vulnerable to changing climates. The mammoth became extinct between about 10,000 and 7,600 BCE, depending on the estimate. This co-incided with the very earliest instances of domestication of livestock animals, signifying a significant change in the way the humans got their meat. The pig was only the second species after the dog to be domesticated (around 8000 BCE,) and was followed soon after by the cow and the chicken.
