More than hate, commerce, and advertisements
Fifteen years ago, Facebook was the place to be online. But times change. That is why the Facebook Museum is already collecting and preserving the most important memories. The museum is a place to reflect together on the legacy of this social medium, to say goodbye in a dignified manner.
From April 8 to September 27, 2026, the Facebook Museum by SETUP will be on display at the Next Nature Museum in Eindhoven. Come to the opening of the Facebook Museum on April 10.
Why Facebook deserves a museum
In the year 2025, we see the number of active users in the Netherlands only declining—or dying out. Only the hate, the polarization, the marketplace, and the advertising remain. Is this how we want to remember Facebook? Facebook has also brought us so much beauty.
For a fleeting moment in history—in 2012—a global community seemed possible with Facebook. A world without countries, without borders, without possessions. A world where we did not look at our differences, but where we united around what we liked.
What do we want to preserve then?
Facebook Museum collects, preserves, and unlocks the beautiful history of Facebook, without closing its eyes to the dark sides of this platform. For although we have our reservations about Meta – the company behind Facebook – it is too easy to make this company the scapegoat. To blame them for what is wrong.
Facebook is a mirror of who we are. How, in 2012, humanity – in one way or another – decided to interact with one another. In doing so, Facebook is neither good nor bad, but an expression of what makes us human. Our good and bad qualities. Of our generosity, our empathy, and enthusiasm, but also of our petulance, greed, and vanity. Facebook reminds us of the best and the worst in ourselves.
