In 1981 the magazine Byte: The Small Systems Journal imagined how future computers would have look like. The answer was this cover by artist Robert Tinney, showing a PC of the era with a tiny floppy disk, downsized to fit the wrist.
Actually, 33 years ago the idea of what we call smartwatch was nothing more than a funny joke. In fact, inside the magazine, the editors remarked that it wasn't a coincidence that this future computer visualization happened to be on the April issue of Byte.
In hindsight, a gag turned out to be a premonition. 21st century smartwatches seem to have a lot in common with Tinney’s concept.
The curious fact about it is that, even if wearable technology has made progress, we could still place a smartwatch on the cover of a high tech magazine and entitle it “Future Computers”.
