Hendrik-Jan Grievink

Visionary artist and designer

Hendrik-Jan Grievink (1977) is a visionary artist and designer. He has been associated with Next Nature in various roles since its inception and is currently a Fellow. Hendrik-Jan uses his imagination to visualise thought-provoking future scenarios that help us make better choices in the present. Projects he has worked on include Meat the Future (The Cultured Meat Cookbook and Bistro In Vitro), which explores the cultural potential of lab-grown meat, and Reprodutopia, a retro-futuristic fertility clinic where visitors are invited to reflect on the future of intimacy, relationships and reproduction. A notable aspect of this project was his speculative design for an artificial womb, which went viral on social media.

In collaboration with Koert van Mensvoort, founder of Next Nature, he created the publication Next Nature: Nature Changes Along With Us and developed the Pyramid of Technology, a conceptual model that visualises how technology becomes nature (and what individuals and organisations can learn from this process). Hendrik-Jan regularly gives lectures on his work, both in the Netherlands and internationally. He is currently working on a long-term research project entitled Check Your Technoprivilege, which addresses the growing technological divide and offers concrete tools to raise awareness, such as the Checklist of Technology Privilege. After spending a year in New York in 2023, he has now returned to Amsterdam, where he lives and works.
