Dr. Garth Webb, an optometrist from British Columbia, has invented the Ocumetics Bionic Lens: lenses that after being implanted through an eight minute surgery, improve eyesight up to threefold. These prosthetic lenses, besides transforming the individual who adopts them into a literal cyborg, prevent issues like cataracts, according to Dr. Webb.
Dr.Webb says his drive to fulfill this project comes from having been saddled with a troublesome burden back in Second Grade: glasses. "My heroes were cowboys, and cowboys just did not wear glasses" he tells. In his experience, glasses and contact lenses are just a great saddle.
The project has been presented to audiences, including several top Ophthalmologists from United States, at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery in San Diego, as well as from Canada, Australia and the Dominican Republic. According to Webb, they were impressed with the Bionic Lenses, and will be involved in further clinical trials for this invention.
Dr.Vincent DeLuise, an Ophthalmologist and Professor at both the University of Yale and the Weill Cornell Medical College, says that "there's a lot of excitement about the Bionic Lens from very experienced surgeons who perhaps had some cynicism about this because they've seen things not work in the past. They think that this might actually work and they're eager enough that they all wish to be on the medical advisory board to help him on his journey".
Depending on further clinical trials and the regulatory processes of each country, the Ocumetic Bionic Lenses could be available in Canada, and in other countries, in just two years. "Perfect eyesight should be a human right", Dr.Webb says. Maybe with this technology we will see better than ever; at least with our eyes.
